meets Saturday

This month’s meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Episcopal Church in Kealakekua. Ellen Crocker is the featured speaker.

The group, composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles, meets on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters and “old hands” are welcome.

Amateur radio group meets Sunday

The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority.

All members, friends and anyone interested in amateur radio are invited. A Mexican food-themed potluck, in celebration of St. John the Baptist Day, will take place during the meeting and attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share.

Ballroom dance club parties Sunday

The Kona Ballroom Dance Club is holding a dance party, including a free introductory lesson in American Tango, from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kona Elks Lodge.

The event is open to nonmembers, and dancers don’t need to bring a partner. A small donation is requested.

Jones completes
basic training

Navy Seaman Recruit Jenelle M. Jones, daughter of Sandra M. Komo and Franklin A. Ota, both of Holualoa, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Jones completed training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

Jones is a 2010 graduate of Konawaena High School.
